As the sun rose at camp, excitement filled the air. We began our day with a devotional reflecting on showing mercy to enemies, drawing from the Scripture passage 1 Samuel 24:8-20. David had the opportunity to harm Saul and was encouraged by his friends to kill him. However, David did not harm Saul.
In connection with this portion of 1 Samuel, the memory verse of the day was Romans 12:17:
Never pay back evil for evil to anyone. Respect what is right in the sight of all men.
Our voices filled the air as we sang camp songs such as “Pharaoh, Pharaoh” and “Father Abraham.” Campers danced the goofy choreography enthusiastically to these songs. The silly choreography evoked laughter and togetherness, setting a vibrant tone for the day.
As the day continued, the boys eagerly embraced the outdoor sports, engaging in energetic games of dodgeball, boating, and horseback riding. Meanwhile, the girls’ cabins nervously began a new activity: dance. Hesitant at first, they followed their instructor’s lead, learning the choreography to a beautiful worship song. But as the lesson continued, something incredible happened. By the end of the dance lesson, the girls had grown in confidence and danced with all their heart, soul, and might for the Lord.
In the afternoon, a game of counselors versus campers sparked playful competition. Counselors hid in creative spots like pickup truck beds and trees. The challenge? Campers had to call out each counselor’s name to tag them and win points for their color teams. The thrill of the chase filled the campgrounds.
Later, rain clouds moved over the camp, so Mishkan (chapel service) was moved indoors. The message drew from the same Scriptures we read during morning devotional and shared the principle of unshakeable trust in the LORD. It highlighted how David opted for faith over a quick solution by refraining from harming Saul, reminding us to do the same in our lives.
We closed the night wrapped in our blankets, munching on buttered popcorn while watching A Bug’s Life.
